Remington raced down the wide, open-air aisles between stalls, following the sounds of slaughter.

People lay strewn on the ground, many of them dead or dying. Hundreds more hid fearfully behind counters, booths, anywhere there was cover.

A few members of the Stone Wall Gang remained standing up, sticking out like sore thumbs at the stalls. But they were all armed, looking for more gunmen.

Remington raced by them all, the bot following with heavy metallic steps.

At last she came to more recent carnage. A woman lay on the ground, her chest still smoking from where a bolt had slammed into her.

Remington saw movement ahead as someone slipped around yet another corner.

She stopped and looked back at the old guard bot, then pointed.

“Go after them. You first. That’s what tanks are for.”

The bot nodded in acknowledgement and clanked forward, rounding the bend . . . and into a hale of blaster bolts.

It ignored the fusillade, energy popping harmlessly on its metal torso.

The bot moved on the gunman lightning quick, far faster than expected. It reached down with one gigantic hand and popped the gunman’s head at a sharp angle, breaking the man’s neck.

Remington rounded the corner and found the assassin’s eyes still open, a look of astonishment on his face, curled up in a fetal position on the ground.

She did not take time to think much about his demise. Instead she reached down and grabbed his blaster, tucking it into the back of her belt.

“Where’s the other one?”

The sound of distant gunfire pointed her in the right direction. She took off running again.

Within seconds she closed in on the other fight, rounding a corner. The last gunman traded potshots with three Stone Wall members. But he had a hostage, effectively blocking their return fire.

An older man, he held a young woman by the neck, placing her in front of himself as a human shield.

The guard bot tromped forward, attracting the eyes of everyone in the gunfight. They paused, taking a time out from shooting.

The man’s eyes grew big and he readjusted his stance, facing the new threat with the hostage still covering his front.

She looks scared, Remington thought. The girl had a look of terror painted on her face, both hands gripping the man’s forearm, trying to pry it away.

“Stand back or she gets it!”

He held the pistol up to her head and stared at the giant old bot, now standing dangerously close but unarmed.

Remington glanced across the street and found Gunk. He was one of two gang members who had been battling it out with the gunman. They both still had their blasters aimed at him.

She locked eyes with Gunk across the distance.

The gunman made the classic mistake of turning to face the new threat behind him. He presented an unobstructed view of his back to the old threat, albeit at an angle. Still, there was enough of him visible for a clear shot.

Remington gave Gunk a nod, sending the unspoken message.

He nodded back and squinted down the sights of his pistol.

Thoop!

The man went down, a chunk of his side obliterated.
